Boiler Installation & Boiler Repair FAQs
Boilers are mechanical, and as such, require maintenance on an annual basis to ensure efficient operation. Boiler parts, such as the fireside, the refractory, the waterside, the burner, and the controls—everything—should be in mint-condition so that you have a guaranteed warm environment come winter.
Do you have power? It’s a pretty basic requirement, but it’s often the last thing checked. Your boiler most likely has an emergency shut off switch, so start there to make sure it is on. After that, check the breaker in your electrical panel. Restoring power may be as simple as flipping a switch or resetting a breaker.
Check to make sure the thermostat is on and set to heat mode if it is electronic. Set the temperature to a higher heat setting to see if the system turns on ( i.e., if it is 65℉ in your home, set it to 70℉ to see if the boiler turns on. If your thermostat has a blank screen, try replacing the batteries to see if that fixes the issue.
Every year, we receive calls from clients that have “No Heat,” only to find out that they are out of oil or propane. If your system uses either of these fuels, check to make sure you actually have fuel in your tank.
Most boilers have a pressure gauge with four bars in it. If your boiler has less than one, you may need to add more water to the system. If you are confident in your mechanical capabilities, simply look up the instruction in your owner’s manual, or do a quick Google search. If you are less adventurous, just give us a call and let R&D HVAC take care of it for you.
Boilers, whether fueled by electricity, natural gas, propane, or oil, all work in a similar fashion. The boiler burns fuel, which in turn heats water that is pumped to radiators throughout the home. The radiators absorb the heat from the water, and then “radiates” the warm air throughout the room. The now cold air circulates back to the boiler, and the process starts all over again until the desired temperature is reached.
Using a boiler of the right size, as assessed by an experienced technician prior to purchase, will be more effective than using an over-sized one. A too-large boiler can produce unnecessary heat that gets lost due to overproduction.
