You invested in a Generac automatic home backup generator, and now you’re never without power. But just like a car, air-cooled backup generators need to be properly maintained to perform as intended. With summer storm season around the corner, the experts at Generac have provided a few maintenance tips to keep your generator operating optimal efficiency.

  • When was the last time your unit had its air filter, oil filter, and spark plugs replaced? Most air-cooled units need to be serviced every 12 to 24 months, or after every 200 hours of use, whichever comes first (locate your manual). If your unit is due for service, contact your dealer, or order replacement parts. If you’re not sure how many hours your unit has operated, check the hour meter on the generator controller.
  • Check your battery and remove any corrosion. Also, clean and tighten battery terminals, and check the voltage state of the battery. If you need to replace your battery, visit any auto parts or battery retailer, or contact your dealer.
  • Check the engine oil level to make sure it is full. If it needs to be refilled, refer to your manual for the correct type of oil. Also, keep a spare bottle of oil on hand, in case your area is hit with extended outages. If there is not enough oil in the unit, the generator will shut itself down to protect the engine.
  • Make sure the generator’s intake and exhaust louvers are free of debris.
