Allergies Attacking Your Family? Fight Back with These HVAC Tips

As the weather warms up, allergies become a huge annoyance. Allergens in the air can even pose a danger for those who have asthma or compromised immune systems. While there’s not a lot you can do about the issues outdoors, pollen, pet dander, and other common allergens cause a significant problem in the home. Your HVAC system heats and cools the house, keeping your family comfortable, but it also provides a pathway for irritants to travel throughout your home. No matter how well you dust, vacuum and keep things wiped down, you will have allergens spread throughout the house when using your heater or air conditioner. Luckily, we’ve put together a few ways that you can reduce this impact by optimizing your HVAC system. Check out these ideas and see if you can implement a few of them to keep your family comfortable and protected from allergens.

Replace Your Filter

When was the last time you changed your HVAC filter? An older, dirtier filter will not be as effective at capturing allergens, and it can make your system work harder to keep temperatures comfortable. Check out the high-efficiency filters or HEPA filters, if your system is optimized to use them. Using a better air filter can remove smaller particles from the air, not just the visible dust and hair.

Consider an Air Purifier

While you can purchase a small one-room purifier for minimal impact, whole-house purifiers can be installed with your HVAC system for even better results. Imagine having the air you breathe cleaned and purified in every room of the house. Filtered air is a huge benefit! Look at the Humidity - Air that is too damp can be a breeding ground for mildew and mold spores--which can wreak havoc on allergies. On the other hand, if the air in your home is too dry, you may have asthma and sinus problems as well. Talk to an expert and find out if a whole house humidifier or dehumidifier would be a good choice for your home. Have Your System Maintained - If adding a purifier or humidifier isn’t in the budget right now, a good way to fight back against allergies is through routine maintenance. Even if your system seems to be working fine, your system may be dirty and need a good cleaning. Plus, regular maintenance helps you find problems with the unit that can be resolved affordably now, rather than waiting for it to break later.
